Composting and Recycling

The City of Calgary recycling Bylaw indicated that multi-family dwellings required recycling be put in place by February 1, 2016. Our complex have had recycling since December 11, 2013. Starting November 1, 2017, multi-family complexes will also be required to separate food and yard waste from garbage for composting or another means of diversion.

We encourage residents to view the YouTube video created by the City of Calgary in regards to recycling and composting: Too Good to Waste. Recyclables (24%), compostable (39%), and landfill (37%) materials are currently piling up at our landfill stations. The City of Calgary suggests that if compost is pulled out of the landfill items, this would decrease landfill materials and costs.

The Board has requested the City of Calgary's Waste Education Team (the "Team") to attend our Town Hall scheduled for Thursday, June 22, 2017 at McKenzie Towne Hall to provide a presentation specifically to recycling and composting. In addition, the Team is scheduled to do door-to-door knocking of all units in the complex on Saturday, July 22, 2017 and Tuesday, August 15, 2017. The Board will also be requesting the Team to attend at our AGM in the Fall (date to be confirmed). Please see our calendar for more information.

Beginning August 2017, two 32 gallon rolling tote will be added to each garbage garage. Eventually, one garbage bin will be removed to accommodate the composting totes. This will also assist with offsetting some of the costs associated with adding composting.

Our vendor, Little Big Recycling can supply Residents with individual kitchen caddies and compostable bags to keep organics in within their individual units at a cost to the Residents. If you are interested in getting one, please contact Little Big Recycling directly at 403-992-4227 or via email at tracey_dennehy@littlebigrecycling.com. Please advise Tracey that you are a Resident of Mosaic of Elgin Hill to secure the pricing.

Information on the individual kitchen caddies (Residents are responsible for this cost):

  • Kitchen caddie size is 16"H x 16"W x 16"D

  • Cost per caddie is $19 + GST = $19.95

  • Compostable bags - $0.16/bag + GST = $0.17/bag

What does the kitchen caddie look like?

We must use compostable bags in the totes only as any other bags used (ie. grocery store, plastic, recyclable, biodegradable) will not be accepted. This will result in the totes not being picked up and possible fines from the City of Calgary. This will also impact the overall cost for everyone in the complex as a special removal request will need to be issued. Anyone seen not utilizing the composting bags will be charged back the cost of the special removal request.

Please see below for the posters which will be placed in each garbage garage indicating which recycling and composting materials will be accepted.
